Making a Contribution

The publication of Dalkey Archive Press books is directly supported by donations and grants that come from a variety of sources. Donations from individuals, government agencies, and private foundations have supported the Press's ongoing International Recovery Project, which restores to print major works of world literature. Beyond this, individuals and foundations have funded Named Series, which allow the Press to publish one or more books per year, either for a given number of years or (through the establishment of an endowment) in perpetuity.

International Recovery Project

The International Recovery Project restores to print major works of innovative literature from throughout the world. Support for the Project has come from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Illinois Arts Council, as well as private foundations, foreign government agencies, and individual donors.

Named Series

A Named Series takes two forms: Annual and Endowed. All works in a Named Series carry a dedication page and series title on the back cover, as well as being listed on the website and in its catalog.

An Annual Series allows the Press to publish one or more books per year because of an annual donation. The cost for establishing such a series is $25,000 per book, or $35,000 per book for works in translation. This donation offsets production, marketing, advertising, printing, translation costs, and author payments. An example of a successful series was "Lannan Selections." Underwritten by Lannan Foundation, a family foundation located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, this Series funded the publication of 50 works of literature written in the English language over a period of 5 years, and supports the ongoing marketing and promotion of these titles.

An Endowed Series funds the publication of one or more books per year forever. The cost of establishing such a series is $375,000 for one book per year. Current Named Series are the Coleman Dowell Literature Series and the John F. Byrne Irish Literature Series. Because we keep all of our books permanently in print and continue to build the readership for them, the establishment of either an Annual or an Endowed Series represents a long-term investment in the culture.
